The article examines the question of how an ethically self-determined life is possible in a post-moral and post-modern society. It addresses the question of how, according to the basic paradigms of Gestalt Therapy, a non-normative ethical consciousness can be developed from individual experience and ethically self-justified by the individual. Referring above all to Perls, Goodman, Rank, Nietzsche and Pauline theology, the author develops his proposal for a Gestalt Therapy ethics in three thematic areas: the fundamental experience of acceptance (Agape), the support of the self-creative will (ego function) as a prerequisite for the formation of a self-determining and responsible ethical profile, and the ability to dwell on the ‘here and now’, with the consequent focus on the ethical in the present reality. In addition, the special connection between aesthetics and individual ethics is emphasised, and thus the special significance of the aesthetic formative power of the Awareness Continuum for humankind’s ethical self-development.
