The present study illustrates a series of ideas collected by the author on the partial function of the Self called “Ego” or “I”, showing how the denomination “I-function” would have been probably more appropriate, since in the theoretical logic inaugurated by Perls and Goodman and deepened by Isadore From, the ego is not a stable entity as it can be in most other approaches, but a moment – ephemeral – in the process of contact and formation of the figure. The I-function represents par excellence the interface between the organism and the environment and, in this sense, is emblematic of the paradigm shift introduced by the founders of Gestalt therapy.
